I wonder what’s up with Chilo Rachal?

I thought the Niners number two selection in the 2008 draft, Chilo Rachal, might have a chance to contend for a starting spot as a rookie, especially when David Baas tore his pectoral muscle before training camp and the exhibition season even started. He (Rachal), was a highly decorated lineman coming out of the O-line factory at USC , so starting was not at all a crazy notion. But………..veteran Tony Wragge has been inserted in Baas’ right guard position for the entire training camp/exhibition season, with Adam Snyder lining up at left guard, next to Joe Staley.  When Snyder got nicked up before the Bears exhibition game last week, and it was announced that he wouldn’t play in that contest, I thought it was “Chilo-time.” Nope. Free agent Brian de la Puente from Cal got the start at left guard, and performed admirably in his first real NFL action. Now we read in the paper that de la Puente is a little banged up, so Wragge is moving to left guard, and Rachal has now been inserted at right guard.  That’s certainly a lot of “guards” to keep track of, but it does seem apparent that Rachal is experiencing a tough transition to the NFL, so far.  Obviously it’s way too soon to tell what kind of player Rachal wil eventually be. The Niners desperately need to build a strong and cohesive offensive line and players like Rachal and Cody Wallace will be heavily counted on, in the not too distant future.
