Just wanted to add my take on the Niners after the Viking game. I have the knife out of my heart now so I think I can say how I feel about this team, other than that I love them, I have always loved them and I will continue to love them.

Mike Singletary is doing a great job! Please keep in mind that, as well as coaching a young team, he hasn't been at this before.....but boy, what an impact! I think the special teams need a lot of work; I think Coach Raye should rethink his determination to push the running game when there are no first downs (a little goes a long way) and perhaps the secondary should watch for cagy old veterans who can put that knife in one's heart. Other than that, I am SO stoked by this team and see a future of wonderful things for all you Niner fans. GO NINERS!

I just heard it on ESPN radio yesterday morning, at around 8AM PST. ESPN must be behind the power curve too? The Paradise always has the scoop, that's why you are lead dogs on the sled.

Good comments.............Crabtree and Company are really putting on quite a show, eh? Their rationale for his contract demands makes exactly no sense to anyone. The Jerry Rice clause still seems goofy to me, but I guess if they (the Niners) are willing to move the number close the 30 mil to get this guy in here, so be it. I don't think 132 balls in two years in that easy BTW. Andre Johnson, argubaly one of the very best wide outs in the NFL caught 145 in his first two years. Larry Fitzgerald sangged 158, but only 58 in year one, and Braylon Edwards 93 in his first two campaigns, although he only played ten games in his rookie year. If Crabtree really thinks he's of the Rice, Johnson, Fitzgerald, Edwards pedigree, he outta sign this afternoon. That 30 mil would be easy money for him.

I agree with Matt totally. If you do the math 135 catches/32 games = 4.2 receptions. It doesn't really seem that hard nor too much to ask for as much money as these spoiled brats in the NFL are making. If he was the best player in the draft as he claims to be, than he should have no problem at all matching those stats.
The saleries that are paid to these young kids is sickening. So many people in this country can't pay their mortgage even if they are lucky enough to have a job, meanwhile kids like Crabtree are holding out cause the $20 million or so that he is being offered isn't what he thinks he is worth. Granted they have talent and train hard, but so do the people busting their ass in the work force. We even take pay cuts just to have a job that barely pays the bills. I just don't understand how anyone could turn down that kind of money. The only thing I can say is that he is a greedy, spoiled kid!

Guys,

Interesting comments, all. Two things I'll stick with:
1-Championship teams are built with the two lines and moving backwards.
2-Singletary didn't want Crabtree.
The best part is, we will all see soon enough. MN and I will try our best to spend some time at the next mini camp and report our personla, untrained observations. Stay tuned.
One last thing, and it might not mean much, but Shaun Hill looked like this is his team. A little strut, big smiles and yukking it up with the guys.

The allure of Crabtree was just too much for the Niners to pass on. Had he been gone Oher would have been the choice. You can make the point that the Niners are rolling the dice on the health of Marvel Smith and Manny Lawson stepping up his game as a pass rusher but the Niners must have seen something that told them to make these decisions. With the additional 1st round pick next year the Niners could land Sam Bradford or Colt McCoy. Perhaps this is the angle that McCloughan saw when he made the trade with Carolina. If not they can address the offensive line or any other need that they see after this year. I do find it interesting that with the Crabtree selection the Niners suddenly have a glut at the WR position and is one of the most promising positions for the future. That statement could not have been made prior to the draft.

I agree with Jeff. Your draft is a good one, but you haven't researched these players like San Fran did. They got the guys they wanted when the were available. There is no way you can pass on Crabtree when he was one of the top two players in the entire draft. San Fran hasn't had a top tier receiver since TO left, and we need one. Can't pass on him.
I agree with the Jeff George argument, but Morgan, HIll and Bruce aren't Montana and Young caliber players.
Furthermore, your argument is contradictory. If you wouldn't draft a backup Rb in the third, why would you draft a RT in the first?
Also, the trade for next year's first round pick gives us options to trade. Either to move up for Bradford or McCoy or get someone else.
I wouldn't change much about this draft. Also, remember they picked up Kort Sheets, too. That is also part of the draft.

Jeff,

I guess my problem is Crabtree is coming off a stress fracture, an injury that has ended many careers. Also, Unless it's a Jerry Rice, the number 10 spot is too high to pick a receiver in my opinion. Don't misunderstand, I hope he turns out to be terrific, but I would have gone the other way. Marvel Smith is one back spasm away from this being the same line as last year. I also don't know how long we can wait for Lawson. As for Indy, with their defensive problems I think I would have gone that way. I think Donald Brown is a fine player, but not a first rounder. Thanks for the response! Keep 'em coming.
